Dunrobin Developments 4

14th July 2011

Here are some views of Dunrobin showing the dismantling as it progresses…
Below: This is the boiler barrel looking from the front towards the firebox. The pointy rivets are very curious (known as a feature on Foden steam lorries) and we are wondering if they are a naval repair (remembering that the engine spent both World Wars in naval service). This might also explain the second ring of the boiler having a double butt strap – one is normally sufficient! This could indicate the barrel was replaced but the section with the dome on was retained and fitted into a new ring. We shall see as once the tubeplate is removed and the internal surfaces cleaned.

Below: The engine (sans boiler) has now moved around to the main works at Bridgnorth – Dunrobin meeting a class of loco it is unlikely to have met before – a BR 9F (92212 being on hire to the SVR this summer).

Below: Drilling stays – these are the copper side stays on the firebox outer wrapper, being drilled prior to removal to release the inner firebox. A long job!

Below: An overall view of the boiler. Since this picture was taken on Friday the front tubeplate has, after a struggle (due to some RN welds securing it to things it shouldn’t be!), been released.
