Balloon latest…
15th August 2011
Well, after initial tests, an inspection over the pit and movements in the depot area, there was sufficient confidence to take 101 onto the tramway for some trials. These included clearance tests, performance evaluation (such as brakes, electric brakes, ability to start on our 1:16 gradient) etc. The weather supplied a glorious evening and it can be happily reported that 101 performed superbly. There is still work to do, but this will carry on over coming weeks and its use on passenger duties over the Power from the Past weekend has definitely crept from ‘unlikely’ to ‘possible’. We do have to focus on 31, and the motor will be removed tomorrow. Hopefully the contractor can turn this around quickly enough for a return to service for the event, for which 31 is having Blackpool style ‘Circular Tour’ headboards made (see Brian Turner’s book for photographs of these in use).
Meanwhile, here are some shots of 101 on test…
Below: The classic ‘town’ view of 101 at the outer circle tram stop adjacent to the bank.
Below: A member of staff lent their Beetle to add some streamlined contrasts!
Below: Reflections in the garage window.
Below: More arty stuff, as 101 having tested the town crossover is prepared to return back across the street to continue it’s journey towards Pockerley.
Below: Rather different to Royal Oak in Blackpool, but the same gradient! 101 ascended with ease and the distinctive and melodic Balloon rumble. It is seen descending during braking tests.
