Hodbarrow Side Tipper – Return of the body
Below: Andy Basnett delivered the newly reconstructed body for the Hodbarrow side tipping waggon yesterday. As can be seen here he has done a fantastic job, so this weekend painting the body and preparing the three pins that locate it onto the chassis can progress. It would be great to have it ready for the GNSF and playing a part in the Colliery Railway operations…
It would be great to see it running at the GNSF. I’ll be there with 0-4-0 ‘Paddy’.
I well remember collecting the two side-tippers from Hodbarrow. Think we paid £25 each. The little Hodbarrow Hudswell Clarke was steamed up, collected the wagons and trundled them past Hodbarrow Point to Millom Ironworks where our lorry was waiting. The lorry took them to Pemberton Opencast Screens, Wigan, where we had free use of the loco shed and all the sidings for the wagons and our Avonside ST. We could even play with a 1930s Fowler diesel which also lived in the shed.
Will try and find a couple of photos of the wagons at Hodbarrow and Wigan.

Hi Ted – it would be great if you do have any photos. Also, do you know the maker? There was an oval indentation and two holes which suggested a plate was carried on the body, which would either be a number (unlikely) or a builder’s plate (more likely).
Look forward to seeing you in April!
Best regards
Paul
