General News Roundup

9th November 2011
Here are a few photographs (taken on my phone so I apologise for the rather weak colours and poor quality) showing some activities around the site…
Below: The Friends are beginning restoration of this WW2 (ish) invalid chair (contemporary terminology) – note the hand cranked propulsion.
Below: This is the wooden coal box the Friends are making to accompany the steam gallopers and which compliments the restored shipping box seen on these pages last year.

Below: This collection of trays are in fact new signs to be fitted to the level crossing gates around the colliery are and display the message ‘No Road Through’ based on a period sign we have in the collection.

Below: The Adams car elevator is progressing well and a maroon colour was identified remaining in fragments on it which has been replicated for the restoration.

Below: Outside (and this is where the phone camera really seems to struggle) the lads are merrily grading the area for Road 4’s turnout, the nose of which is now in place and probably, by this lunchtime, the rest will have followed too…

Below: This is Beamish archaeology! Once upon a time the tram lines ran out of the depot and curved round towards the town without having to reverse the car. This arrangement was later removed and the depot fan constructed. However, the remains of a post (cut down and the stump buried!) have been uncovered. I am guessing this was for the outer span wire on the curve and illustrates how tight this section was!
