Newcastle & Gateshead tramways map
Newcastle and Gateshead Official Tram Services Map
We were recently able to purchase this wonderful folded guide to Newcastle and Gateshead tram services, dated April 1923 and showing both systems – note the absence of the Tyne Bridge at this time! Andy has scanned the image and using some trickery you can view the whole map or zoom in and roam about it. The paper is very thin and the reverse, details of routes and fares, shows through. However, this is a fascinating document and though costing rather more than the original 1 penny, it is a great addition to our collection.
the 1923 is significant as that is the year trams first crossed the High Level Bridge and the map shows the first joint services between Newcastle and Gateshead. The map does seem to have missed the joint service from Low Fell to Gosforth.
An interesting point Mel and it isn’t entirely clear on the map that the trams are crossing through the High Level Bridge. I suppose like timetables today, this could have been issued then the ommissions realised! It might account for its mint condition, in that it may never have been used. The old fashioned spelling of ‘shewing’ and ‘thro’ is also noteworthy. All in all a very nice thing!
With careful study, and reference to Mr. Hearse’s Book, the Map does seem to be right–the Low Fell to Gosforth route being represented by the Blue Line–very interesting to see this map in colour –Thanks–Stu.
