Lewin latest – the boiler is replaced into the frames…

Below: Here is a selection of images taken this morning showing a historic moment for our No.18 (or Lewin) – the re-fitting of the newly overhauled boiler into the restored frames. The work had to be carried out in the yard outside the workshops (for obvious reasons) so Lewin’s frames were carefully coaxed outside and the HIAB lorry brought in to replace the boiler. The engine was then returned to Vince Allen’s workshop and immediately received further coats of paint in an effort to push work along a bit. The cab and bunkers have been completed and work in Staffordshire is now concentrating on the tank. With the return of the boiler, several other jobs can now take place pending the arrival of the superstructure. The cab back sheet will be modified to create angled corners as well. The timber for the buffer beams (timber currently being eye wateringly expensive!) should arrive at Beamish next week.
