General News Roundup
Below: Harry Wilson has completed the NER tile map and redecoration of the ladies waiting room, apart from some work to the seats and window sills. This view shows the completed map and associated NER poster boards.
Below: Not quite transport and industry, but adjacent to the railway line so of some interest, this is the replica communal bread oven to the rear of Francis Street and backing onto the railway sidings. Such ovens were used by communities to bake bread, making an interesting contrast to the developing bakery in the rather more prosperous town area, as depicted at Beamish.
Below: Finally, a couple of views of the narrow gauge railway, with preliminary work on the new formation which will take the line towards the boilerhouse and under the gantry to the pit heap – this will make for, I think, some very atmospheric industrial scenes and is bound to be popular with photographers! Darren and Mark are still engaged in their epic track straightening exercise to sustain this effort.
Communal bread ovens were a feature of French rural life also. There are still many of them in the French south-west and they are fired up from time to time (fetes, marriages, etc.). Terribly important as centres of gossip!
