General News Roundup – into July…

A busy week at Beamish…

Below:  We’ve acquired this rather nice heavy duty trolley, which will be used in the Colliery engine shed for carting heavier and larger lumps of engine, or displayed appropriately.  Seen here after delivery.

Below: HSI placement Dan has more or less completed his overhaul of the Wickham permanent way trolley, seen with a deck newly fitted (reclaimed wood from some gates on site!).

Below: In anticipation of Lewin’s arrival in coming weeks, a major shunt was arranged for the Colliery railway, to clear loops and sidings required later on.  Newcastle was moved over to the ‘long-term’ siding and is seen here with Coffee Pot No.1 providing the traction.

Below:  The missing panels and beading on Oporto 196 have been replaced after the frame beneath was repaired and Phil Anderson has started on the repaint preparations.  The roof adverts have been removed and work on this area will also start next week.

Below:  The Friends are bringing to fruition a number of projects – the Hodbarrow waggon is seen in the workshop, with attention focused on the underside of the body.  This has also seen the pins made and trial fitted.

Below:  Other projects undertaken by the Friends team includes this cannon (for which an entirely new base was made), a chaff cutter and the invalid carriage.

Below: Progress on the car elevator has seen the rope fitted and work on aligning the side brackets onto the centre axle carried out.

Below: Over in the vehicle workshop, HSI apprentice Jordan is assisting Brian and Tom with work on the Ford Popular, which has had its rear wings removed and much attention, welding or otherwise, to rusty patches.  This won’t be a concours condition car – it will look like a well used vehicle, and will represent the condition most cars of the period ended up in, rather than a showroom example.  It will, of course, be regularly used and forms the start of the 1950s collection that I hope will grow over time…
