General News Roundup – 3rd September 2012

Well, here we are again at the end of another event, with all the work reversed to get everything back to where it came from!  We had over 12,000 visitors over the four days, which is a great result and there have also been very many positive comments.  This morning GP39 and Marchlyn were loaded onto James Milner’s trailer for their journey south to the Apedale Valley Railway, and after that GP39 will head to the Ffestiniog Railway for their celebration of the engines (now nearly all in steam) that famously featured in the scrap line there fore many years in the 1960s.

Below: More rural news than transport, but we have been given this little Fergie TE20, which was restored by a scheme at a prison in the Midlands.  Brian is seen inspecting the tractor and carrying out some repairs before starting it up and making an assessment of its condition.

Below: The two Armstrong diesels together…

Below: … before No.2 was tasked with shunting NER carriage No.256 down the line for loading and return to the Tanfield.  The Tanfield Railway have been wonderfully supportive of our event and special thanks to the board there and Ian Cowan for enabling the moves/loans/swaps to happen.  No.2 will be operating the passenger service this weekend while the Y7 is at Tanfield – so if you want it as traction here, come along for one weekend only!

Below: These reclaimed ships bulkhead light fittings are being modified for G&I 26 in order to complete the illusion and the conversion back into its BR guise, and to use up four lights in the circuit to enable the saloon lights to function as the nights draw in again…

There is still much to look forward to though with events at Tanfield and the NRM at Shildon this month.  As ever we are so very grateful to all of those who brought their exhibits to our event and helped make it a diverse spectacle and one which seems to be growing in strength with every one that passes – roll on the Great North Festival of Steam – 12 days of transport and steam action in April 2013 – as ever, for details, watch this space…!!!
