Transport & Industry News update…

Its been a little while since I posted on the blog – there is a lot happening but much of it is progress in either documentation terms or on ongoing projects, which despite a lot of work can look little different over a period of weeks.  Here is a round up from the RHEC:

Below: The correctly specified tube of metal that will form the shell of Samson’s boiler has arrived.  Other than marking out and drilling for the chimney (which enables handling of the eight foot long tube), progress is so far limited to the casting of the chimney base and arrival of a section of tube to form the chimney.  Little will happen with the boiler until the design for it has been completed and approved, but we now have something on which the engine unit can be assembled and a large number of castings are on order with the foundry.

Below: The Friends volunteers continue to battle the B&P roller as it is dismantled down to a bare chassis, with few components giving yielding easily at this stage.  The engine is now held by its cradle and the gearbox has also been removed.

Below: Samson – this view shoes the tops of the tanks temporarily clamped in place.  There are two tanks, which can be removed by dropping from the frames if required.

Below: Some of the Learning team and others are taking part in a local cycle ride, in costume.  Here they are practising!  The working cycle collection is currently in great demand almost every week for various events and outreach activities.

Below: Les is making good progress on re-upholstering the seats for the B-Type, with tatty and picked at red examples seen to the right and overhauled and re-covered (now black) examples to the left.

Other members of the team are working hard on the Bakery, with fit out of the interior well under way.  A new blog theme will shortly appear on this site, detailing the project to build a Colliery Stable Block in the Pit Village – Jonathan Kindleysides will bring you more on this soon…
