Great North Steam Fair – a further selection of photographs…
In anticipation of a dedicated gallery to teh Great North Festival of Transport 2014, here are some more images taken on my rather battered compact camera whilst moving around the Museum. More will follow…
Saturday 12th April:
Below: At the end of the day as the sun sinks, the Sentinel DG8’s blower pulls hard on the fire as it prepares for its last journey of the day…
Sunday 13th April:
Excellent , the best transport related event I have attended at Beamish ever .
Even Saturdays weather couldn’t spoil proceedings in my opinion , a fantastic collection of exhibits in an ideal setting .
Well done to everyone involved .
Superb – great selection of exhibits, looks like I missed a few of them though. You managed to get a shot of me at the cookhouse!
Rob,
were you one of the Durham pals in the cooking tent? if you email me I have a few pics and perhaps you may be on them
regards
Nigel
I was, yes, will send an e-mail!
Can’t seem to click on anything to find an e-mail for you – mine is rob.langham (at) gmail.com
Thanks, Rob
Paul,
I Attended Saturday and Sunday and may I take this opportunity to compliment you and your team on what has to be one of the best events that not only Beamish have put on but I would have to say one of the best events of this nature I have ever attended.
The selection of road vehicles was simply stunning and to see the Tarmac Sentinels together for the first time I have been told since 1946 was amazing.
I and my friends can not recollect ever having seen so many people at Beamish and it will be interesting to see the final numbers and as to if you have broke your own records.
Thank you to you all for an amazing two days, will send you some pictures.
Nigel
We’re glad you enjoyed it – certainly the general feeling is that it was the best yet. How do we beat it next year though?!!!! We have some plans… We had 16,254 visitors over the four days – certainly a record for the transport event and with over 4,600 on the Sunday, one of the highest figures in recent years overall. Time to catch our breath before the summer activities begin! Kind regards, Paul
I visited on Saturdays 5th and 12th. For me the 5th felt a bit quiet and subdued compared to other recent events, however the 12th was the complete oposite and more than made up for it. Great atmosphere and a real buzz to the place, in 10 years of visiting Beamish events, it was probably only beaten by last Aprils “Our Friends Electric”.
Last year having the three consecutive weekends of events produced something special accross all three weekends, but I’m not sure it quite had the same impact this year. Thats not meant as any criticism of your efforts – the 12th was a really good day.
I’m inclined to agree with you Rob – the Edwardians at Play theme was originally intended to be rather grander, but various issues arose that meant we couldn’t put on the full display in the way we originally intended. The weather didn’t help either. But, the Great North Steam Fair was, we feel (Paul and I from the Museum side and Colin and Ian from the Friends), our best event yet. We had over 16,000 visitors so are very pleased with the result! Next year’s plans are in development, again looking at three weekends of activity, but with Easter coming early, the order will be different to preserve the dates for the steam fair. We are also looking at re-balancing the number of days in each event, to meet demand and also react to requests. So we are likely to do the four day steam fair, an amended themed weekend and then Old King Coal, with a major community input. As ever, watch this space! Paul
