Below: This early (possibly pre egg-ended) boiler arrived today, recovered from a farm in Northumberland. Notable are the flat ends, which suggest that it is a very early specimen. Beamish’s Learning & Access team are currently undertaking a survey of Northumberland farm steam sets (the remains of which are prominent in the form of chimneys and a surprising number of surviving boilers). This boiler was discovered as a water storage vessel and was in imminent danger of being scrapped. Thanks to the cooperation of the owners it has been donated to Beamish where it can be studied, conserved and placed on display at Home Farm.

Below: Over at the Bowes Railway the three chaldron waggons have received a repaint over the winter and are seen here enjoying some sunshine! At Beamish, Alan Milburn is starting on the rebuild of our own chaldrons, with the target of having eight waggons in running order by September’s Great North Steam Fair…

Below: The reason I was at Bowes was to deliver narrow gauge rail for incorporation into a sectional narrow gauge/miniature engine shed – this is portable and will see use at next weeks PftP event for housing the two visiting Wrens. It will be completed today and painted tomorrow and should arrive at Beamish next Tuesday.
