Beamish 40th Anniversary Celebrations
3rd July 2010
Well, we have been busy! As you will no doubt have seen from earlier blogs and Beamish’s other websites, it is our 40th birthday! To celebrate this weekend is Beamish at its best – steam everywhere!!! Last night was an evening for those involved, past and present, with making the museum what it is – so needless to say there were a few engines in steam…
Below: Rambler, town guardian and looking well for the repainted rear rolls! Wait until the front ones match, and its all lined out…
Below: The Friends demonstrated a wide variety of cycles through the evening (and are today too). The Excelsior is seen here.
Below: The Matchless motorcycle meanders between Rambler and a couple with a pram – all in period garb!
Below: The horse bus was giving rides around the site.
Below: And Rambler moved to take advantage of the evening sun!
Below: Mike then joined me (as did Guy and Michael with their engines) and something of a Fowler catalogue photograph resulted.
Below: On the way back to base Sarah and I tried out the new road through the fairground site.
Below: Where Winston Churchill was parked adjacent to Neil Corner’s Gavioli organ. These will all be in operation this weekend if you want to see them!
Below: This morning 31 was rolled out, suitably sashed for the 40th. It looks stunning, the colours are vibrant and it looks very very good – a credit to Phil Anderson. Crests to follow then the lining can be completed on the scumbled (wood effect) panels.
Great looking images.
Looks like you’re getting a Summer.
I looked for an image of the Burrel Showman’s Engine and found it here.I live in NZ now and correspond with an old pal in Durham. Flynn had the engine and a Gavioli Organ. He showed them with steam up at Durham Big Meeting Day circa 1957.
The open top tram is identical to the tram my Mother drove at West Hartlepool 1916 to 1918. Many stories she told me about that, Zeppelin raids on the steel works at Wagga.
