A trip out to Shildon…

9th March 2011
Today I called in at Shildon (NRM) to meet Anthony Coulls and catch up on various and varied matters, as always the temptation to have a look around at the impressive array of motive power and rolling stock was there, and it is now some line-up!
Below: Mallard and the Stirling Single, representing two generations of East Coast motive power.
Below: Newly arrived from Turkey, this ex WD 8F is in as-received condition and makes a stark and enlightening contrast with the exhibits around it.

Below: Compare the 8F with the Crab! Seen being repainted in previous blog posts, it is now complete, another Phil Anderson masterpiece! Phil is actively working on Newcastle Tram 114 at Beamish – the target is still the Great North Steam Fair!

Below: While at Shildon, this Network Rail test train came up from Darlington on its way to Stanhope, covering the tracks of the Weardale Railway beyond Bishop Auckland. Its a very long time since I saw (and heard!) a Class 31 running!

Below: More contrasts! The LSWR T3 4-4-0 is prepared for its trip to Canada, where it will feature in a production of the stage version of the Railway Children. The pallets it will be shipped out on will bring Dunrobin and Coach back to the UK…

Below: Finally, some completed components from the G5 project were on display. This is a new build of a North Eastern Railway design 0-4-4T, largely being constructed around the north east. This will be a terrific engine to run alongside the J21 one day!
