More on ‘Newcastle’

Today, a filming assignment underway in the Colliery (which required Coffee Pot No.1 in steam) gave me the opportunity to shunt Newcastle downhill of the level crossing and also take some photographs of it in this new setting.

Below: 1901 and 1871 respectively…

Below: Spot the difference with the photo above… I placed Lewin’s old chimney onto Newcastle to add a little dignity for the photos below!

Gordon Wells passed on some fascinating prints showing Newcastle when he collected it from Wissington and delivered it to the farm at Heydon in 1972…

Below: Loading Newcastle at Wissington, with Gordon Wells climbing aboard the trailer. The engine in the background is, I would guess, the Hudswell Clarke named Wissington and now about to steam after restoration on the North Norfolk Railway.

Below: Arrival at New Buildings Farm, Heydon.

Below: The ramp is built and the engine prepared to descend onto tracks that would be home for 40 years.

Below: Descending…

Below: … and down. Note the enclosed cab, stovepipe chimney and missing sandboxes.

Below: Newcastle is marshalled in the middle of this trio, shunted by Kitson No.5469/1933 at the far end (now preserved on the Middleton Railway) and with another Kitson, Colwyn I think, being propelled towards the low-loader for removal from the site. I think it went to Chappel and Wakes Colne, the North Norfolk and is now on the Northampton & Lamport Railway.
