General Transport & Industry News Roundup from Beamish…
With another hot week drawing to a close, here is but a brief glimpse at the T&I team activities over the last few days…
Below: Daniel and Shaun manhandle a fireplace surround into the Joiners Shop in order to make a frame to fit it. It will then be installed in the Bakery, where most of the buildings side of the team have been busy in recent months.
Below: Chris is seen welding feet to recovered railing uprights. These will also be incorporated into the Bakery, fencing off a mechanical dough mixer (more on this next week…) which will be a working feature within the display.
Below: Over in the Timber Shop a number of doors have been made and primed ready to fit the new ‘rooms’ at Rowley Station, which have been created within the water tower structure. Also shown is a Scout Handcart that we were given some time ago. This is being prepared for use as part of the new ‘Open Stores’ display – for more on this see the relevant section of the main Beamish website.
Below: Tom, with Chris, has been busy rebuilding the brake gear on Sunderland 101. A considerable amount of play has been removed and much welding and remaking of parts has been undertaken on these very worn components.
Below: Tom admires his handywork – 101 now progresses along in an altogether quieter manner!
Below: With the hot weather, 223, 31 and 114 have been in service every day, supplemented by 26 and 196 as required (and occasionally 101). 233 and 31 are seen here being prepared for a day’s service.
Below: 233 and 196 pass at Foulbridge. This weather surely can’t last indefinitely so this really is the time to come if you want to enjoy an almost full open-top service at Beamish!
Below: In conjunction with the book ‘Forty Years of Service’, a new DVD titled ‘The Trams of Beamish Museum’ is now available. Made to broadcast standards by Videoscene, it is available from our shop or directly from Videoscene (who have a website). It is very good and not only covers our own trams, but most of the visiting cars over recent years plus numerous events and photographic charters. Well worth the £12.95!
