Bowes Railway news
General News – April 2009
The arrival of a new fork-lift truck has plus hire of a HIAB for a day has enabled various items to be moved and placed on more prominent display – such as the steam compressor seen below. John has also been expanding his tinplate O gauge railway in the ‘playroom’! I’ve also included a pre-painted shot of the roadmenders hut, to reveal what a work of art this really is…
The compressor is not steam but electric it was delivered to beamish Mary pit in 1929 then to a Durham coast pit which one unknown then to marley hill colliery installed under the screens not a 100 yards from the tanfield railway shed when the pit closed it went to ashington workshops were it was rebuilt and the motor rewound to 3300 volts installed and ran the workshop until the power roof supports shop shut it was offered to beamish with the original reyroll oil switches and the workshop would have stripped it out transported to beamish but it did not fit in with them it is sad to see it in this condition.
